AJ Brown, former Ole Miss WR, receives injury update after exiting NFL season opener
New England Patriots wide receiver AJ Brown’s team debut did not go as hoped. The former Ole Miss Rebel got hurt trying to make a catch early in the third quarter of Wednesday’s 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Brown was seen holding his lower leg after the play and did not return to the game.
Thursday morning, we received an update on Brown’s ailment. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the prevailing belief is that Brown suffered a high ankle sprain. The longtime insider said X-Rays came back negative for a fracture, but that Brown will have an MRI today to determine how much action he’ll miss.
“Generally, high-ankle sprains can be about 4-6 weeks, so that would put short-term injured reserve in play for AJ Brown,” Rapoport said on Good Morning Football. “But [this] does not seem to be an overly, overly significant injury. Not great news, but not terrible news.”
Brown made 3 receptions for 26 yards prior to his injury. He had an opportunity for his first Patriots touchdown on a flea-flicker in the second quarter, but Drake Maye’s pass was underthrown, resulting in defensive pass interference instead of points.
Maye tossed 3 interceptions in New England’s loss. The Patriots will try to regroup when they play the host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2.
