The NFL has made it clear that it won’t allow players to pretend they are drinking a beer while celebrating, and the league is starting to dish out punishments for it. Early in the week, the league punished San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Now, Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson is the latest player to be handed a punishment by the league.
From the NFL’s reasoning behind the fine, it stated “imitation of shotgunning a beer” Sunday vs. Washington that “constituted an offensive demonstration and could reasonably could be construed as being in poor taste.”
The NFL, over the past few years, has tried to clean up some of the celebrations, and fines have been issued for numerous celebrations over the years. However, one thing that stands out about this is the amount of money the NFL makes from the beer companies. The sponsorships, the numerous commercials during the broadcast- there are many different ways that the league and the beer companies have a working relationship.
The standard is being set, and now it will be interesting to see if players are going to change their celebrations or are they willing to take the fine and still celebrate their big plays.
