Former Alabama player Daron Payne and the Washington Commanders have had a frustrating season, and that continued on Sunday as they lost to the Detroit Lions by a score of 44-22.
For Payne, those frustrations boiled over during the game, as he threw a punch at Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. The officials saw it and they ejected him from the game.
Here’s a clip:
Ejection may not be the only punishment that Payne receives, as the NFL will surely take a look at this. The league has put an emphasis on taunting and unsportsmanlike penalties, and this type of play could easily turn into a suspension for Payne.
Payne has been in Washington since being drafted No. 13 in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Alabama. His best season came in 2022 when he had 64 tackles and 11.5 sacks.
It has been a frustrating year in Washington to say the least. Last season, the Commanders were one of the best stories in the NFL. Jayden Daniels had a spectacular rookie season, and he led the team to the NFC Championship game.
This year, he has had to deal with a ton of injuries and the team is now 3-7 on the year and would likely have to run the table to make it to the playoffs. While being frustrated is understandable, this is a moment that Payne will wish he made a different decision.
