Former Georgia assistant Todd Monken lands NFL head coaching gig
Todd Monken has been coaching football since 1989. In those 37 years, he was a head coach just once (at Southern Miss, 2013-15). On Wednesday, that changed.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cleveland Browns have hired Monken as their head coach. The former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator is staying in the AFC North after 3 years in Charm City.
Monken, a key assistant for Kirby Smart on title-winning Georgia teams in 2021 and 2022, was the architect of a Ravens offense that led the NFL in yards per play (6.82) in 2024. That mark was the second-best in the NFL from 2005-2024, behind only the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs. That same year, the Browns’ offense posted the fewest yards per play (3.81) in the league over the same span.
Lamar Jackson won first-team All-Pro honors in 2023 and 2024, the 2 fully healthy years he enjoyed in Monken’s offense. Cleveland is hoping Monken can develop Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and/or a soon-to-be-added passer into the team’s franchise quarterback.
Monken is the Browns’ 9th head coach since 2010. He’s replacing Kevin Stefanski, who won the NFL’s Coach of the Year award twice (2020, 2023) in his 6-year tenure with the team. Cleveland owns the No. 6 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, which begins on Apr. 23.
