Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers with the Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback suffering from a superficial blood clot.

The former Alabama and Oklahoma star signal-caller, who has led the Eagles to 2 Super Bowl appearances in 2022 and 2024, winning 1 championship during that 2024 season, was confirmed by the Eagles to be out in a statement made by the team on Thursday afternoon.

Hurts’ absence is just the latest blow to the team among a sea of injuries and a 3-game losing streak that has taken Philadelphia from a 2-0 start to its current 2-3 record. The team confirmed that Hurts would not play on Sunday while the Eagles determine his course of treatment.

With Hurts sitting out against Carolina, Tanner McKee would be in line to start for Philadelphia in Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET contest. McKee is listed behind Hurts on the Eagles’ depth chart, with rookie Cole Payton listed third behind McKee.

The Eagles’ statement on Hurts read, in part:

Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.

Here is the Eagles’ full statement on its standout QB released after the confirmation of the blood clot:

The diagnosis on Hurts is a bit of a shock, if for no other reason than Hurts being listed as a full participant with a calf injury on Wednesday’s practice report. The Eagles’ statement on Thursday didn’t provide a specific timetable for Hurts’ return to the field.

Instead, for now at least, the Eagles are only ruling Hurts out for this Sunday’s game against Carolina.

Hurts played at Alabama from 2016-18, helping the Crimson Tide win the national championship in 2017.

He went on to play at Oklahoma in 2019 to finish out his collegiate career before the Eagles drafted him in the second round in 2020. The 28-year-old Hurts has already made 3 trips to the Pro Bowl during his time with Philadelphia.
