LSU legend Joe Burrow spoke briefly about the ongoing dispute between Jayden Daniels and the LSU Tigers during a media availability on Friday.
Daniels and his family sent a cease and desist to LSU earlier this week regarding the school’s use of his name, image and likeness. A statement from an attorney working on behalf of the Daniels family said they felt “profoundly disrespected” after LSU allowed cornerback DJ Pickett to wear Daniels’ No. 5 jersey in 2026.
Head coach Lane Kiffin said that decision was made because the No. 5 jersey was promised to Pickett during his recruitment, though the sophomore was not given the chance to don that number during his freshman year under Brian Kelly.
Burrow, who like Daniels, won the Heisman Trophy while playing for the Tigers, wore number 9 during his time in Baton Rouge. While Burrow largely declined to comment on the matter, he did confirm that LSU told him no one else would wear No. 9.
“They told me that they wouldn’t use it again,” Burrow said. “But you never know what happens.”

While LSU has honored numerous jersey numbers throughout its history, only 1 number — Billy Cannon’s 20 — has been permanently taken out of the rotation. Cannon was the program’s first Heisman Trophy winner.
In addition to winning the Heisman, Burrow led LSU to a perfect 15-0 season and the National Championship during a historic 2019 campaign. Daniels’ LSU career ended with a 10-3 record.
