Sean McVay shares encouraging update on former Georgia QB Matthew Stafford
Sean McVay was excited in Saturday night’s postgame press conference after his Los Angeles Rams beat the Dallas Cowboys in its preseason opener, but the head coach’s excitement had nothing to do with the actual game.
Instead, McVay was asked about hobbled starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, the former Georgia star who’s been dealing with a back injury during training camp. Stafford had a throwing session on Saturday, and McVay was encouraged that everything checked out well. Stafford is expected to return to practice on Monday, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.
Here is Rapoport’s report on Sunday regarding Stafford’s return to practice on Monday:
While Stafford watched, McVay’s Rams got a strong performance from another former Georgia quarterback, Stetson Bennett, who threw a couple touchdown passes in the 31-21 victory over the visiting Cowboys. Bennett showed he might be ready to step in if Stafford suffers a setback with the back problem, but McVay will be happy to get his starter back at practice on Monday.
“It was awesome. He looked good. He threw the ball really well. There was no limitations in terms of the types of throws. Deep, intermediate, short,” said McVay during Saturday night’s press conference about Stafford’s throwing workout.
“We were moving the launch point and, you know, he felt really good. And so we’re looking forward to progressing him back into practice on Monday. But it was a good step in the right direction.”
McVay wasn’t sure if Stafford, who played at Georgia from 2006-08 and was a first-team All-American in 2008, still had lingering issues with his back.
“I don’t know. You know, that’s something that you’d have to talk to him about,” said McVay.
For now, McVay is just happy for the return of his starting signal-caller, who led the Rams to a Super Bowl title in 2021.
