NFL Hall of Famer John Elway was allegedly involved in a golf cart accident earlier this week, and the local authorities have revealed an update as of Friday evening.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Elway’s longtime friend and business partner, Jeff Sperbeck, was on life support after falling off the back of a golf cart that was allegedly driven by Elway. Sperbeck passed away shortly after due to a traumatic brain injury.

It was also reported that authorities were opening an investigation into the incident. That investigation has not yet been completed, but an update was provided on Friday by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

According to Bianco, there currently appears to be no sign of criminal activity or wrongdoing on the part of Elway or anyone else. He also indicated that medical personnel who responded to the scene did not find any evidence that Elway was inebriated.

“This appears to be a horrific accident,” Bianco said Friday via Luca Evans with The Denver Post. “And unfortunately for all of those involved, one of the people – well, a couple of them – happen to be very high-profile celebrities. And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be.”

The involvement of the sheriff’s office only followed a massive wave of media inquiries due to the high-profile individuals involved, per Bianco.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure that this is what it appears to be, and just an accident,” Bianco said.
