Ben Shelton was once a dominant star for the Florida Gators on the tennis court. Now in his professional career, Shelton is on the rise, and he’s engineering a special run at Wimbledon.
One of the most illustrious tournaments in all of tennis and one of the Grand Slam tournaments, Shelton advanced to the Round of 16 on Saturday with a win over Márton Fucsovics out of Hungary. At just 22 years old, Shelton is compiling one of the best runs for an American in quite some time.
According to ESPN, Shelton is the youngest American to make 3 Major Round of 16 appearances in a year since Andy Roddick in 2004. That’s 21 years ago.

Making Shelton’s run at Wimbledon even more impressive, he has yet to drop a single set in 3 straight 3-set victories. He opened his time at Wimbledon with wins over Australians Alex Bolt and Rinky Hijikata.
Now, Shelton is moving on to face Italian Lorenzo Sonego on Sunday. It is Shelton’s 2nd consecutive trip to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon.
Shelton began the year with a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open before losing to Jannik Sinner. At the French Open, Shelton made a trip to Round 4 before losing to Carlos Alcaraz.
Now, we’ll see if Shelton can chase down his first major tournament victory.
