Cam Newton was cut by the New England Patriots Tuesday in a blockbuster move that named former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones the starter.

All indications heading into Tuesday was that Newton was still the starter; however, that changed very quickly. Now, Jones takes over the reins of the Patriots offense, as he’s had a spectacular preseason. The former Alabama signal caller completed 36-of-52 passes for 389 yards and one touchdown.

Meanwhile, Newton will be looking for a new NFL home after being cut lose by the Patriots. Newton hasn’t spoken publicly about being cut yet; however, he reacted to the decision on his Instagram page.

“I really appreciate all the love and support during this time, but I must say … Please don’t feel sorry for me,” Newton wrote. “I’m good.”

Newton was a team captain for the Patriots in 2021. He finished the preseason completing 14-of-21 passes for 162 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

New England re-signed Newton to a one-year deal in March, which included $3.5 million guaranteed.
