JJ McCarthy has been the biggest riser of the entire NFL Draft cycle, rising up draft boards after a national title and strong showing throughout the entire pre-draft process. Now, he’s riding that surge all the way leading up to the start of the draft.

Monday morning, McCarthy’s odds to be the No. 2 overall pick in the draft started to rise in a big way. On Sunday, he was +2000 to be the No. 2 pick at FanDuel, but he has risen all the way to +900 early Monday afternoon.

He is even higher with ESPN Bet and DraftKings listing McCarthy at +800 at the time of this writing. That surge doesn’t guarantee anything when it comes to the draft, and it’s worth pointing out McCarthy still isn’t the favorite to go No. 2 overall.

LSU’s Jayden Daniels is still the favorite at ESPN Bet with the reigning Heisman winner listed at -180. UNC’s Drake Maye is also ahead of McCarthy for the No. 2 pick odds with Maye coming in at +145.

What does it mean?

The No. 2 pick is currently held by the Washington Commanders, and the team is moving forward with a new head coach in Dan Quinn. Washington is definitely in the market for a quarterback, though fans will have to wait to find out which one is higher on the franchises list come Thursday night.

For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Adam Schefter still expects Daniels to be the selection. He tackled the latest intrigue regarding the top of the draft in an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” and he still believes the most likely outcome is the Commanders staying put and drafting Daniels.
