Jon Gruden announced his resignation as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night.

Gruden made the announcement via a media release:

“I have resigned as Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction. Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”

The distraction Gruden refers to is the scandal that has emerged after the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times revealed offensive remarks Gruden made in uncovered emails.

Gruden was fired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. He was out of coaching until 2018 when he took the Raiders job. Gruden’s offensive comments were made when he was an NFL analyst for ESPN.

Gruden has a 117-111 record as an NFL head coach. The Raiders are 3-2 in the 2021 NFL season.
