Greg McElroy is extremely optimistic about Oklahoma going into the 2025 season.

McElroy broke down some of the reasons why he’s so high on the Sooners on the latest episode of the Always College Football podcast.

“One of the biggest sleepers in the sport for me, the Oklahoma Sooners,” McElroy said. “This is a team that I am wildly bullish on.”

He cited Oklahoma’s significant returning production as well as the introduction of new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. Arbuckle is now in Norman after a successful stint at Washington State, as is former Cougars quarterback John Mateer. That duo is expected to result in significant improvement for OU’s offense in 2025 after the Sooners had one of the worst offenses in the sport this past fall.

Defensively, McElroy points out that Oklahoma will return 11 of its top 19 players from last season in terms of total snaps played.

With a win total at 6.5 per most sports betting apps, McElroy acknowledged OU’s tough schedule in 2025. The Sooners are set to face Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama and LSU, amongst others. But a “fast start,” per McElroy, could lead to some serious momentum later in the year.

“I think this is a team that if they can get off to a really fast start in September, they’ll be able to carry over some of that momentum into October and November to be able to become a real problem down the stretch.”
