Reports: Lane Kiffin expected to be named Ole Miss head coach
Lane Kiffin is expected to be named the next head coach at Ole Miss, per multiple reports.
Rivals.com’ Neal McCready has been all over the Rebels’ head coaching search, and now, reports around the country are surfacing that Kiffin to Ole Miss may be complete Saturday.
Kiffin and FAU play UAB Saturday afternoon for the Conference USA Championship Game, as the Owls are favored by nine points. As McCready reports, Kiffin is expected in Oxford on Sunday with an official announcement likely Monday.
It's not officially signed, but it's done. Lane Kiffin is Ole Miss' next head football coach. He'll arrive in Oxford Sunday. I expect the Ole Miss band to meet him there. He'll be announced officially on Monday, likely at the Pavilion at Ole Miss. @RivalsChase.

Kiffin’s potential return to the SEC is interesting in several ways, and he likely could have had the Ole Miss or Arkansas job; however, the Rebels roster is set up to win more games now.
SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic hinted that Kiffin may put together an all-star coaching staff in Oxford, too.
Hearing the potential staff being brought in may make this Home Run hire a grand slam. https://t.co/62DOeyH5hi

Following his stint at Alabama under Nick Saban, Kiffin took the FAU job and has really done well and rehabbed his image. He’s compiled a 25-13 overall record, including 18-6 in conference. Kiffin has had head coaching stints at Tennessee and USC prior, too.
Matt Luke should have been given another year
lol. Right. Well, your program is welcome to hire him. I hear he’s still available.
From an outsider’s perspective, he did pretty good considering the hand he was dealt, minus how he handled the Egg Bowl aftermath this year.
Now that’s some funny stuff!!!!
It was because of Luke’s recruiting that Kiffin took this job. The young talent is a major draw.
A person could probably make that case, just like a good case could be made for Mizzou giving Odom another year. It puts both Ole Miss and Mizzou in a situation where the coach they hire had better hit the mark or things could actually get worse than what they had, especially in Mizzou’s case. Arkansas firing Morris is a lot more understandable as they were abysmal, it shouldn’t be that hard to improve on what they had.
Wrong. One word; discipline. Metcalf did the doggy show 2 years ago in Starkville and Luke should have NEVER let it happen again.
If you think the behind the scenes drama with Freeze was intense just wait for Kiffin to get in gear.
What……
Wow. This is huge. And will certainly make for an offseason of much talking and speculating.
He’s a one man drama circus
Hahahahah!!!
Christmas come early!
Starting a GoFundMe to get you hooked on phonics for Christmas. Don’t worry little fella, it will get better. No child left behind!
I mean…it feels on brand. Both flashy and dangerous. That’s been Ole Miss lately.
Very true. It’ll either be a home run hire or a train wreck. Either way it will be very entertaining.
If only we could of got him and Leach in the same conference it would be a heck of a show
Boy Kiffin to Ole Miss. Sounds like a match made in Heaven.
Kiffin along with those infamous Ole Miss Booster’s may get interesting before it’s all said and done…
Just think, if not for Auburn beating Alabama, Kiffin might have been the new HC at Auburn. That would’ve been something…
Great pick up for DirtFishU if true…Word out of Boca is he likes to get a little sauced after games and hike a leg on the palm trees in his back yard…
What a man likes to do in his own backyard is certainly his prerogative. People who like to peek over fences into backyards other than their own are more concerning, but suit yourself.
Valid point.
The SEC West just got stronger.
Just what the West needed as the East stays mediocre.
It could have been a lot worse. He’s not a bad a coach …now if he can just act like a grownup, it may work.
IF…
It’s worth a shot I guess. But there’s nothing about his resume that shows he was very good against ranked or even above .500 teams, even when his own teams were ranked they weren’t very good at it. Finding someone who has the ability to beat better teams is kind of a big deal for all the schools looking for HC’s in the SEC right now.
While I don’t care for the guy, this is a great hire for Ole Miss and will be the most successful hire by any school in this cycle. ESPN and the SEC Network just got an early Christmas.
One other note: Who were Southern Cal’s two best recruiters during Pete Carroll’s championship years? Ed Orgeron and Lane Kiffin.
When has Kiffen ever succeeded as a HC?? He was a disaster at the Raiders, one ok season at Tennessee, got fired in the parking lot at USC…. He’s a good coordinator but I don’t get the love. He’s failed as HC everywhere he’s coached.
Look at his record at FAU, after he completed the Nick Saban Rehabilitation Program for Fired Head Coaches. And remember, he just has to win at Ole Miss. Championship expectations at Ole Miss are not at the same level as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU.
If nothing else he’ll definitely make things interesting
Excellent point.
I wonder if Mike Bobo will get a spot on his staff?
I would think Bobo will have a spot on the UGA staff next year.
Dang good for Ole Miss. He will atleast get one year a win against Vandy.
Doesn’t everybody?
We keep our fake guru and they hire the best candidate in college football. It’s no looking good for us over the next 4 to 5 years unless he hits on the wrong coed. Then he may hang himself.
*not
Lane Kiffin is only 44 years old. He was 31 when he was handed the Raiders, and 33 when he took over Tennessee. His best days as a coach are in front of him, not behind him.
I agree.
Assuming he doesn’t revert to old habits when under stress.
I think he will be a success there.
The CFP is BS. They want Big 10 Ohio State playing a weak number 4 in the semifinals, not a strong number 2 or 3. So they put them at #1 despite having only one (1) Top-10 win all season, and they put LSU at #2 despite having four (4) Top-10 wins this season, A FEAT NO TEAM HAS ACCOMPLISHED IN OVER 100 YEARS. Right, there’s no pro-Big 10, anti-SEC bias there, not at all.
Ohio st is really good. Not sure that you have been paying attention
They ain’t SEC so they ain’t no good!
/strums banjo
Not sure you pay attention to the facts. In fact I am sure you don’t.
What facts? They’re undefeated. They’ve dominated everyone they play. They’re good on both sides of the ball. To act like it’s a huge disparity between them and LSU and ClemPson is just not warranted. They’re easily one of the best teams in the country.
It’s ok as a fan to acknowledge another team is actually good
Really good? Is that like, “Dr. Francis? He’s okay?”
Really good like on any given Saturday they can hang with any team in the country
This clearly a discussion that is completly in context with the article.
Great retort to the facts.
This is going to be fun to watch.
He will bring a good offense for sure. He needs to recruit the players to run it. He also needs to hire a good DC. I’m skeptical. I don’t think he’s as good as Freeze or even Nutt as a head coach. Ole Miss does not have the best recruiting base, and he will find it harder to win there than he did at Tennessee. Nothing against him. I like him. But the SEC West is a monster.
The SEC West is loaded with good recruiters, Kiffin is going to have very stiff competition. The cupboard isn’t bare though.
Kiffin wants a QB who can throw the ball. I haven’t seen much of Corral, but I suppose Kiffin can coach him up. Plumlee might want to consider a transfer.
Dude you’re an idiot
@HailzBullyYall Is right – very low IQ. I couldn’t think of a better QB/Offensive coach to develop and utilize Plumlee’s abilities.
Not as good a coach as freeze and nutt??? Are you daft? That’s just ridiculous. He’s every bit a head coach as freeze. Nutt can’t even get a whiff of an interview since he quit on ole miss mid season. As far as recruiting grounds are you at all cognizant of the fact that Mississippi generates players to multiple sec programs? That ole miss routinely gets players from Louisiana? Alabama? Tennessee? Jesus if your going to post drivel at least have your facts straight!!!
Also Mississippi has the most 5 stars per captia than any state so yeah I agree pretty dumb comment.
Oh dear, I think I rubbed Mississippi the wrong way. I guess when you consistently rank in the 20s in recruiting, you get the championship caliber teams Ole Miss and Miss State have had.
Or when you do have a top 5 recruiting class the entire SEC gets butthurt lol
Assuming that Ol’ Mess hires him, does ANYONE think that this is the coaching position from which Little Lord Kiffin will retire? Or is it just another stepping stone for him? If he makes this program a contender in the SEC West (good luck!), he will be out of the door for greener pastures ASAP.
That’s certainly a possibility, especially with a guy like Kiffin who has already shown he’ll jump ship overnight. However, as a Mizzou fan if we were to hire a coach who knocked it out of the park for 3 years and then left for a $6 or 7M gig at Michigan, Miami, Texas or wherever I would be fine with it. The program would obviously be in a much better place and much more attractive than it is right now to a really good, perhaps more in-demand coach looking for a sweet spot to land. Odom would have never left Mizzou, like ever so at some point you have to decide do you want a coach who is likely to stay or do you want to have a better opportunity to get back to competing like you once were? Ole Miss is choosing to give Kiffin an opportunity to make them more competitive on the field, if he does it’ll be worth it to them I’m sure, even if he leaves for $$$ pastures in 4 years.
I’m just happy UF will get to hand Kiffin another L in 2020!
Looking forward to Saban and Kiffin on opposing sidelines next year.
Oh boy lol you know we’re gonna get some A+ memes from this.
Lol that’s all you “fans” care about is memes. Like I told you morons last weekend the game was the worst thing that could happen to us. While our “fans” were just worried about memes Ole Miss was worried about winning and now they have dramatically improved while we still have a moron at the helm but you didn’t even go to State so you don’t represent our school which is a positive
I just looked at the Ole Miss schedule. Open with Baylor, Auburn, Bama, LSU, Florida, TA&M. You can’t say Lane isn’t afraid of hard work to take on that monster of a schedule.
Meanwhile, Mizzou is looking to hire Doofus McGoofus from Backwater U.
Odom needed to go,but I’m nervous as hell about our coaching search.
Terrible choice – bad fit. This will not end well for Ole Miss
