Homefield advantage is a big part of what makes college football fun, especially in the SEC. Things will be different in 2020, however, thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Numerous SEC teams have already announced reduced attendance in the 20-25 percent capacity range for this fall.

The topic of crowd noise came up during Lane Kiffin’s appearance on “The Paul Finebaum Show” Thursday. Kiffin humorously noted things won’t be as difficult for road teams this fall, noting this year’s crowds may be smaller than some spring games.

“We won’t need silent counts, I can tell you that,” Kiffin told Finebaum. “When we go to Tiger Stadium we’ll be able to yell audibles to the players on the five-yard line.”

Tiger Stadium has a reputation for being one of the loudest, if not the loudest, stadiums in the country. According to Sam Karlin of The Advocate, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards is expected to have a decision on the crowd size of LSU’s first home game in 10-12 days. Right now, judging by other SEC programs, it certainly seems safe to assume Tiger Stadium’s capacity will be somewhere in the 20-25 percent range.

Ole Miss is scheduled to finish the 2020 season at LSU on Dec. 5. Kiffin, of course, is plenty familiar with the Death Valley crowd noise from his trips to Baton Rouge in 2014 and ’16 as an Alabama assistant.
