Boise State enjoyed a dream season in 2024, led by Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty. But once the dream ended in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff, reality set back in almost immediately. In the portal era, the Broncos are going to have to scratch and claw to keep their team together every offseason.

Former Broncos offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, who retired last week, accused Oregon of tampering with a key defensive starter during a radio interview on KTIK 95.3 FM The Ticket this week.

“I know for a fact that just last week, after the Fiesta Bowl, one of the key starters on defense got a call from the Oregon Ducks offering him $700,000,” Koetter said.

In a letter to Boise State fans recently posted on his Facebook page, Koetter claimed that Boise State players were being offered 2 to 10 times what Boise State can afford.

“I’m not privy to how exactly they divide it up, but when I said that part about guys are getting offered two to 10 times more, that same coach told me that every starter that started significant games for Boise State would be able to get at least $200,000 a man on the open market,” Koetter said on KTIK.

Oregon is no stranger to tampering accusations. While it is widely known Nike co-founder Phil Knight has been more than willing to bankroll the Ducks’ NIL efforts in pursuit of a national championship, the Ducks have become a constant target for anyone irritated with the impact the transfer portal and NIL have had on roster management.

The Ducks have landed 8 incoming transfers so far — though none have come from Boise State. Nine Ducks have left the program via the portal.

Boise State has seen 13 departures via the portal, including 7 on defense. None of Boise State’s defensive starters in the CFP quarterfinal loss to Penn State have entered the portal.
