A Power 5 conference is publicly proposing a major change to the NCAA’s redshirt policy.

According to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, the ACC has proposed that freshmen be allowed to play in any four games and still redshirt for the season starting in 2018. The American Football Coaches Association has supported the proposal. Under current policy, a freshman is not eligible to declare for a redshirt if he plays after a team’s first four games of the season. The AFCA is currently having its annual convention.

The change in redshirt policy opens up all kind of possibilities. True freshmen stepping in during “emergency” situations or playing in November cupcake games and even bowl games could become much more common if the fourth-game rule is no longer in effect. Taking a redshirt allows players to wait to start their four years of eligibility. A redshirt can technically be taken any year for any reason, but is most common in the first year on campus. Sometimes, players who redshirt as freshmen and suffer early-season injuries later in their careers apply for sixth years of eligibility.
