There are some elite teams in the country this year, but so far, Alabama, LSU and Ohio State have stood out above the rest.

That isn’t to disrespect Oklahoma and Clemson, but the three teams mentioned above are widely considered the most dominant right now. But who is No. 1?

ESPN College GameDay analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard debated that question on Saturday’s show:

Lee Corso: “LSU is the No. 1 team in the nation. They beat Texas and Florida, both ranked teams and without any current weaknesses. They’re No. 1 and have been playing like No. 1 having beaten two ranked teams.”

Herbie: “If you look at resume and resume alone, you have to make a strong argument for LSU, but if you look at the beginning of the season through six or seven weeks with offense, defense and special teams, I think it’s been Ohio State the most complete team.”

Desmond: “I absolutely love LSU’s offense, but they don’t have a championship defense. I can’t put LSU No. 1. I’m still just leaning towards Alabama. … I’m still going Alabama (over Ohio State) by a thin margin.”

This will sort itself out over time, but this is a good look at where things stand right now. Alabama and LSU play each other in a few short weeks.
