College GameDay was not at one of its typical destinations on Saturday. Instead the crew set up shop for a heated rivalry between two FCS powerhouses, as North Dakota State defeated South Dakota State 23-16.

There were other rivalries happening around college football that are just as heated, with higher stakes. Included in that group was Auburn facing off at LSU in a top 10 SEC West matchup that has always produced fun games.

Chris Fowler, who is no longer a part of the College GameDay crew, but still broadcasts the primetime games with Kirk Herbstreit, has a Saturday night segment on Instagram called the “Nightcap Recap”. Fowler sat down with GameDay analyst Chris Fallica and Herbstreit to give an unfiltered look back on the day’s games. They start discussing Auburn and LSU at the 8:40 mark of the video.

“LSU-Auburn, if you know anything about that rivalry,” says Fowler, “is traditionally one of the most physical, brutal, tough rivalries.

“They had to show some real old school LSU toughness to grind it out,” continued Fowler.

Herbstreit gave credit to LSU for winning a defensive battle, and praised Auburn and true freshman quarterback Bo Nix.

“Auburn is a good team, man,” said Herbstreit. “They don’t have the record to show for it right now, but they’ve got a great defense, and a true freshman quarterback in the SEC.

“They played away from home against Oregon, (Texas) A&M, Florida and LSU, and they still have to go to Alabama, with a true freshman. That’s a grind, and they are still very competitive.”

LSU has a bye week before preparing to travel to Alabama, and Auburn will host Ole Miss next Saturday.
