The Miami Herald is reporting tragic news.

Miami Senior High School coach Corey Smith was killed at his home after suffering multiple gun shot wounds. The incident was called into police at 9:36 a.m. Monday morning when someone said a man was unresponsive inside his home. Smith was dead when police arrived at the home.

Smith’s brother, Lamar Alexander, was killed in a highway chase and shootout involving a hijacked UPS truck in 2019 the week after Thanksgiving. Alexander and another man hijacked the truck and were killed in the ensuing gun battle with police.

Smith took his nephew, Alexander’s son, into his home following the incident.

Now, his nephew, who’s name hasn’t been released, is a suspect of Smith’s murder, per the Miami Herald. He was the only other person to have been on the property.

“The 15-year-old in the home was unharmed. Police are still talking to him,” Miami-Dade Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said Monday afternoon. “We’re still waiting on a warrant to get into the home.”

Smith’s nephew told police that he was studying inside the home when he heard gun shots ring out.

Miami head coach Manny Diaz commented on the tragedy Monday.

“It’s been a very difficult year in the South Florida high school coaching community,” Diaz said. “This is another difficult moment. It was hard news to hear that this morning. Our staff is deeply saddened by that.”

Smith was 46 years old and a graduate of Miami High and Bethune-Cookman University. He worked for Miami-Dade Public Schools for 2 decades. The Stings finished 9-4 last year following Smith’s first season as the head coach.
