Could Major League Baseball really cancel its upcoming amateur draft?

That’s the latest from AP Sports citing sources familiar with the discussions.

According to the Associated Press, the move is being mulled over by Major League Baseball due to the fact games are likely to be lost due to the coronavirus outbreak and canceling the draft could save the league money.

The AP is also reporting tension between Major League Baseball and the league’s Player Union in regards to the financial issues that are likely to arrive should the upcoming season be shortened due to the coronavirus outbreak. At this point, no one knows when the season could potentially begin, which only adds to the issues facing the sport.

Major League Baseball is scheduled to hold the first round of the draft in Omaha leading up to the College World Series but the NCAA announced last week that the College World Series has been canceled.

At this point and time, the questions far outweigh the answers available due to the coronavirus outbreak. Now it appears we can add the status of the Major League Baseball draft to the list of uncertainties.
