We may be a long way away from the start of the 2020 college football season but when it comes to preseason rankings, it’s never too early for die-hard fans to debate how their team will be ranked heading into the upcoming season.

With that in mind, college football analyst Cole Cubelic recently shared the initial preseason top 10 from ESPN’s Football Power Index.

Before getting to the 2020 preseason rankings from the FPI, we took a look back at the 2019 preseason rankings from the FPI to see how accurate they were. Here’s how ESPN’s Football Power Index rankings looked heading into the 2019 season: #1 Clemson, #2 Alabama, #3 Georgia, #4 LSU, #5 Michigan, #6 Oklahoma, #7 Notre Dame, #8 Florida, #9 Auburn and #10 Oregon.

For the most part, that top 10 looks pretty good in hindsight but some other 2019 preseason rankings didn’t hold up nearly as well: #11 Texas A&M, #13 Ohio State, #14 Michigan State, #15 Tennessee, #16 Mississippi State, #18 South Carolina, #19 Missouri, #20 UCLA, #21 Florida State.

ESPN’s FPI would like to have those misses back.

Here’s how ESPN’s Football Power Index currently ranks the top 10 for the 2020 season:

#1 Clemson

#2 Ohio State

#3 Oklahoma

#4 Alabama

#5 Penn State

#6 Wisconsin

#7 Texas

#8 Texas A&M

#9 Notre Dame

#10 Georgia
