With the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide routing the LSU Tigers, 55-17, in Baton Rouge and the No. 6 Florida Gators dispatching the Tennessee Volunteers, 31-19, in Knoxville on December 5, both schools clinched their spots in the 2020 Southeastern Conference Championship Game, scheduled for December 19 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) released their updated projection for this contest on Sunday, giving Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide an 85.2 percent chance to return to Tuscaloosa with a victory.

Here is how the network describes the FPI.

“The FPI is a measure of team strength meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.

“FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.

“Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete.”

This will be the first meeting between these two programs since Dan Mullen became Florida’s head coach in 2018, with the last clash coming in the 2016 SEC Championship Game, a tilt Alabama won, 54-16.

All told, the Crimson Tide and Gators have battled 39 times dating to 1916, with Alabama holding a 25-14 edge, including six-straight triumphs.

Despite missing out in 2019, this will be the Crimson Tide’s sixth appearance in this game in the last nine seasons, while Florida is making the trip for the first time since that 2016 loss.

Slated to kick at 8 p.m. ET, this game will be broadcast on the SEC on CBS, with Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson, and Jamie Erdahl on the call.
