The SEC will play a 10-game, conference-only schedule during the 2020 season as we continue to navigate our way through the COVID-19 pandemic as a country.

On Monday, the SEC revealed the full 2020 football schedule, and ESPN’s Rece Davis — the host of College GameDay — said the 10-game conference season is something all Power 5 leagues should adopt.

Speaking on the SEC Network reveal show, Davis said he’s long championed 10 league games, another Power 5 game and then a do-what-you-want game to make up a 12-game regular season.

“I’ve been a proponent of this before the pandemic,” Davis said. “I think this is the way it should be. They should play 10 conference games, and they should do it every year, pandemic or not. The ACC should do it. The Big Ten should add another game, and they should do it. And the Pac-12 should, too.

“I think a 10-game conference schedule and still have one more game against a Power 5 opponent when normal times return, and the 12th game teams can do whatever they want. … I think this is the wave of the future, and I hope that this is something the SEC adopts permanently.”

If this season goes well and fans respond positively to the 10-game league slate, will Power 5 conferences continue with it moving forward?

We’ll find out following 2020, it seems.
