Hugh Freeze met with reporters on Monday to preview Auburn’s Week 8 matchup against Missouri.

In his prepared opening statement, Freeze gave a bit of a backhanded compliment to coach Eli Drinkwitz and Missouri. He credited Drinkwitz — as well as Mark Stoops and Clark Lea — for the programs they have built despite “lesser rosters” in the SEC.

“I know everybody has their rankings of coaches and it’s based on, to me, the better talent you have the better coach you are,” Freeze said. “To me, some of the better coaching jobs are done with those lesser rosters in recruiting. I think you look at people like Eli and [Mark] Stoops and heck, Clark Lea now too … that I think are doing incredible jobs at their respective programs with the kids that they’ve had.”

Here’s video of Freeze’s comments:

Freeze later noted that Drinkwitz is one of his closest friends in the conference and that they speak often.

Missouri is coming off of a blowout win over UMass in Week 7. Auburn has lost 3 straight SEC games entering this weekend’s matchup. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
