Jack Sawyer clinches Cotton Bowl with strip-sack TD of former roommate Quinn Ewers
Jack Sawyer made the play of the season for Ohio State late in the 4th quarter on Friday night at the Cotton Bowl.
Facing a 4th and goal, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers dropped back to pass. He was quickly met in the backfield by Sawyer, who knocked the ball loose, picked it up off the turf and sped 83 yards into the other end zone for a game-sealing defensive touchdown.
Here’s a replay of Sawyer’s game-deciding play with ESPN’s Chris Fowler on the call:
That touchdown gave Ohio State a 28-14 lead with just over 2 minutes remaining. If the Longhorns had found a way to score on that drive, all the pressure would have been on Will Howard and Ohio State’s offense to answer on their ensuing possession. Instead, Sawyer ensured victory for Ohio State.
Sawyer and Ewers have history together. They were briefly roommates in Columbus during Ewers’ lone season with the Buckeyes back in 2021. While Ewers transferred to Texas the next offseason, Sawyer has remained a mainstay in Ohio State’s front 7 — and now has the Buckeyes on the brink of a national championship.
Ohio State will face Notre Dame in the national championship game in Atlanta on Jan. 20.
