Last year, a new NCAA redshirt rule made it so players can appear in four games and still use a redshirt. That’s how Kelly Bryant sat out and transferred despite starting the first four games of the year for Clemson.

Now, another quarterback will be doing the same thing.

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte, Houston quarterback D’Eriq King will sit out the rest of the season, use a redshirt and have another year of eligibility. Then, King could enter the NCAA transfer portal.

“It’s the best decision for him at this point,” Eric King, D’Eriq’s father, told Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston. “Very, very tough [decision]. He’s got a lot of teammates riding on him. Sometimes you got to be a little self-centered & do what’s best for you”

King passed for 663 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions through the Cougars’ first four games, during which they went 1-3. It’s been a disappointing start, as it’s the first time Houston has lost three of its first four games since 2012.

However, the Cougars have had a difficult schedule, as two of their losses came against Oklahoma and Washington State.

It will be interesting to see where King’s career heads next. Last year, Bryant used his redshirt at Clemson, then decided to transfer to Missouri for his final year of eligibility.

There will surely be a lot of schools interested in King, who was a second-team All-AAC selection in 2018, when he passed for 2,982 yards and 36 touchdowns while also rushing for 674 yards and 14 scores.

Last Thursday, King both passed and rushed for a touchdown for the 15th consecutive game, breaking a record previously held by Tim Tebow.
