Kevin Sumlin, Gene Chizik land new head coaching jobs, per report
Kevin Sumlin was fired by Arizona after a winless 0-5 2020 season.
Gene Chizik hasn’t coached since he was the defensive coordinator at North Carolina in 2015 and 2016. He hasn’t been a head coach since Auburn fired him after the 2012 season.
But, both former SEC coaches are reportedly back in the game. According to Cole Cubelic, Chizik has been hired to lead the USFL’s Birmingham team, while Sumlin has been hired to run the league’s Houston franchise:
The @USFL has hired its coaches for the Southern division:
Birmingham- @CoachGeneChizik
Houston- @CoachSumlin
Tampa- @thetoddhaley
New Orleans- Bart Andrus— Cole Cubelic (@colecubelic) January 6, 2022
The USFL will kick off in April. It will feature 8 teams playing 12 weeks of games.
How will Sumlin and Chizik fare? That remains to be seen, but they bring a wealth of SEC experience to the table for the new league.
