Kirk Herbstreit could not help but look ahead to what could be an intense debate on Selection Sunday.

Sorting the 3 leading 1-loss teams was a popular topic on Tuesday night. Greg McElroy took aim at Oregon’s status as the top 1-loss team. In a post-reveal media teleconference, CFP committee chair Boo Corrigan was directly asked about how the order of Oregon, Texas and Alabama was decided.

Herbstreit wondered Tuesday how the committee would handle both Alabama and Texas winning out. Herbstreit implied that the other 3 spots would go to champions from the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12.

“If Texas wins out and Alabama wins out, there’s no way Alabama is going ahead of Texas,” Herbstreit said during the rankings reveal broadcast. “So I don’t know what’s going to happen around them, but can you imagine if Alabama were to knock off Georgia and Texas were to win the Big 12? What in the heck do you do with Alabama?”

“I think the debate becomes more about Alabama and an Oregon-Washington discussion if Oregon were to win out. There’s no way Texas is going to be left out if they win out and Alabama ends up being the SEC champ.”

As of right now, Washington and Oregon are Nos. 5 and 6. The Huskies beat the Ducks 36-33 on Oct. 14. We’ll see how things play out over the final weeks.
