Greg McElroy didn’t hold back when he discussed Oregon as the highest-ranked one-loss team in the latest CFP rankings.

“What you’re telling people to an extent is telling people ‘Hey you know what, just schedule Texas Tech in the preseason.’ Because that’s who Oregon played, and Oregon went on the road and looked ugly in that game,” McElroy said during Tuesday’s rankings reveal on ESPN. “You look at the strength of the record, it’s not comparable. Texas and Alabama are both operating right now pretty well. I wouldn’t say they’re passing the eye test with flying colors, but they don’t have the luxury of facing Cal.”

“And I’m not trying to take shots at Cal, I’m not taking to take shots at Colorado and these other teams, I’m not. But why is the committee — and this committee is irritating, I’m going to be honest with you. Why are we using resume to define Ohio State as No. 1, we’re using eye test to define Georgia and Michigan at 2 and 3, we’re using eye test plus resume for Florida State at 4. And then we like Washington… There’s no consistency.”

The ESPN panel then went on to suggest the same logic should be applied to Michigan in the top four, but McElroy tabled that discussion and wanted to just focus on the one-loss teams.

“I want to remove the undefeateds for a moment because they’ve earned their right, 1-5 whatever order they’re in. Cause they went out, they handled their business,” McElroy said. “But the conversation at the moment as we take inventory of the college football landscape. The conversation between 6, 7, 8 needs to be a real one because Oregon’s being propped up by a big win against a very average Utah team.”

Oregon hosts USC this Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
