Boo Corrigan, chair of the College Football Playoff committee, met with the media to discuss the latest CFP rankings coming out of Week 10. A particular area of discussion this week included the top 1-loss teams in the country.

As things currently stand, Oregon leads all 1-loss teams at No. 6 with the Ducks followed by Texas at No. 7 and Alabama at No. 8. Despite a big win over LSU, the Crimson Tide did not move coming out of Week 10.

Asked about the order of teams 6-8, Corrigan said it is never about one single metric and admitted the committee spent a lot of time on the order:

“Again, looking at the win over Utah, understanding that Texas has a win over Alabama, Alabama comes back with wins over Mississippi, Tennessee, LSU, but it’s a compilation of everything that I was talking about in answering Joe,” said Corrigan. “It’s not one single metric, but we spent a lot of time on it, and we want to make sure we get it right.

“It’s not we do it one time and then move on. We’ll do it one time and then come back to it again and come back to it again and make sure that everyone is comfortable with where we are.”

Later in the discussion, Corrigan was asked if the committee could “justify” Alabama at No. 8 following the major win over LSU. He believes the committee can and used Oregon’s top-5 offense and top-15 defense to explain the Ducks landing at No. 6.

Corrigan also cited Texas’ head-to-head win over the Tide to put the Longhorns at No. 7:

“Again, as we look at this as a committee, we continue to evaluate the play on the field. We continue to evaluate the resume, as well as statistics,” Corrigan explained. “Texas has the win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa, which is a significant game overall this season as we look at that as well as Oregon continuing to play really well, their win over Utah and the balance of the top-5 offense and top-15 defense.”

Greg McElroy was particularly bothered by the Ducks staying put at No. 6, saying the committee is “irritating” and acknowledged a lack of consistency in the rankings.
