As soon as news of Hugh Freeze’s resignation broke, former LSU coach Les Miles began getting mentioned as a candidate to be the next head coach at Ole Miss.

Whether Miles would want to go to Ole Miss and whether the Rebels would seek his services have been hotly debated, particularly on Twitter. USA Today reporter Dan Wolken, who broke the story that Freeze used his university phone to call an escort service, weighed in on both topics.

Jason McIntyre of The Big Lead wrote an article Friday with the headline, “Chip Kelly & Les Miles Would Laugh if Ole Miss Called, and the Rebels Are Headed Back to Being an SEC Laughingstock.” Wolken said that Miles, for one, would certainly not laugh at a call from Ole Miss. In fact, Wolken says his sources say the former LSU coach is “extremely interested” in the job and has already reached out to program boosters.

Those wanting to see The Mad Hatter in Oxford, however, might not want to get their hopes up just yet. In Wolken’s opinion, Miles to the Rebels would only work if Ole Miss is seeking a “caretaker” to guide the team through a harsh sentence from the NCAA.

After being fired from LSU last September, Miles made his interest known in multiple Power 5 openings. Recently, he told a Baton Rouge sports anchor he plans to do television work this season.
