The way things are going, former Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen may have to get a new nickname.

In August 2017, Lorenzen, who was affectionately known as “The Hefty Lefty,” announced he would be chronicling his weight-loss journey through “The Jared Lorenzen Project.” He shared his story of avoiding the scale for eight years only to learn he had gained 200 pounds since his playing days in the NFL.

A little over eight months later, For The Win caught up with Lorenzen for a phone interview to check on his progress. Lorenzen said he has lost 100 pounds since the project started. In fact, most of that weight fell off in the first few weeks.

“In six weeks, I lost 70 pounds,” he told For The Win.

He credits a change in diet as well as walking, lifting weights and yoga to helping with the weight loss. Lorenzen also shared how messages from the project’s Facebook page inspire him to continue to be active.

“When I get out of bed, I’ll grab my phone and start reading messages, like, ‘I was 340 (pounds) and I’m down to 305,’” Lorenzen told FTW. “It’s like, get your butt out of bed and go do what you gotta do!”
