The newest FBS school is now in need of a new coach.

Liberty’s Turner Gill announced Monday that he is retiring from coaching following a 6-6 season, the school’s first at the FBS level. Gill went 47-35 over the last seven seasons with the Flames, who moved up from the FCS’ Big South Conference.

In a press release from Liberty, Gill cited his wife’s heart condition when explaining his retirement. He said he stuck around to help the program transition to an FBS Independent, and he accomplished that as the Flames will be bowl-eligible next season.

Gill also coached at Buffalo (2006-09) and Kansas (2010-11), and he wraps up his career with a 72-84 overall record. Liberty announced that its search for a new football coach will begin immediately.
