Ohio State and football coach Urban Meyer have taken a firm stance against a recent report by Brett McMurphy claiming Meyer covered up a racially charged incident between a former player and former assistant Zach Smith.

During Tuesday’s Big Ten Coaches Teleconference, Meyer suggested the school could seek legal action against McMurphy. You can read Meyer’s entire response to the report below, courtesy of a report from 247Sports.com.

“Last week, we were made aware. Jerry (Emig) and Gene Smith were made aware that there was a story from this reporter that was going to be printed. Gene and the administration acted – we were getting ready for the Michigan State game – aggressively. They got involved immediately with it.

“They interviewed up to 10 people. I was just kept abreast of it as it was going. My first reaction as it was of everyone around here was irate. Our players, I mean, were over-the-top irate. They came to see me. They were extremely upset that kind of accusation would be made about something is absolutely not tolerated.

“Quite honestly, it is the most preposterous thing I have ever heard since I’ve been involved in college athletics.

“To see a reporter go after a player’s mother like that … I guess I don’t read enough articles. To call out his mother and list some of the things that have happened in her past, I don’t quite understand what that is all about. The personal attacks … I wasn’t going to read it, but I did read it.”

“We have a big game this week and we’re moving on. But we are certainly looking into legal action. I don’t know how that is allowed. I don’t understand the rules and the laws of the land how you can just accuse people of something that did not happen.”

Around the same time, Ohio State president Michael Drake tweeted an official university statement about McMurphy’s report for Watch Stadium. You can see the school’s stance below.

Meyer has already come under plenty of fire as a result of McMurphy’s reporting, specifically an August story that launched an investigation into whether Meyer knew about Smith’s allegedly abusive relationship with his ex-wife. Smith was again implicated in the most recent report for allegedly making racially charged comments toward receiver Trevon Grimes, who has since transferred to Florida.

McMurphy has caught a considerable amount of backlash for the report, most notably from Smith, Meyer’s daughter and Buckeyes players.
