Oklahoma has handed down punishment to Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield for a gesture he made on Saturday that many thought was inappropriate.

During the Sooners’ game against Kansas, Mayfield, who may be the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, was caught on by the television coverage camera grabbing himself inappropriately while shouting across the the field at Kansas.

He had just scored a touchdown that put Oklahoma up 27-3. The Sooners went on to win 41-3. Kansas players refused to shake Mayfield’s hand at halftime before the game, which prompted him to give them something a little extra special.

Mayfield apologized for the gesture after the game.

Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley punished Mayfield, sort of, on Monday.

Riley announced that Mayfield will not start on Saturday against West Virginia, and he also won’t be a team captain, per the official Oklahoma Football Twitter account.

However, Mayfield will play in the game. It didn’t specify how soon.
