Paul Finebaum is aware of comments made by Notre Dame Athletics Director Jack Swarbrick, who said recently that a Division I split is inevitable, and it could happen by the mid-2030s.

Finebaum agreed, and took it another step.

“I don’t think this is a sustainable model that will last a couple years. It’s impossible to predict the break up of an organization like this because it moves so slowly,” Finebaum said. “But it is going to come apart, the NCAA is on its last breath and I think college football as we know it is on its last breath, and it’s happening with unbelievable speed, supersonic speed that I could not have predicted.”

Finebaum made his comments on his regular appearance on Monday on “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” on WJOX out of Birmingham, Alabama.

Also in the interview, Finebaum was asked if his opinion has evolved about LSU hiring Brian Kelly.

“I like the hire because Brian Kelly is one of the top 5 or 10 coaches in America,” Finebaum said. “I also like it because it’s a significant upgrade from what LSU had.”

Finebaum noted that Ed Orgeron stumbled into the job after Les Miles was fired, but was not a high quality coach. Orgeron was a good recruiter, but a terrible organizer and steward of the program, Finebaum said.

“So from that standpoint, the program is in much better shape as far as the leader,” he said.

Finebaum then addressed Lane Kiffin and the outlook for the 2022 season, as the Rebels face a remade coaching staff and a new quarterback.

“If you take away the sideshow of Lane Kiffin, all the drama, all the Twitter, all the fun stuff that we all laugh about and joke about, the guy’s a terrific football coach,” Finebaum said. “He’s incredibly underrated.”
