Back in August, the NCAA allowed student-athletes who play fall sports to remain eligible for an extra year, due to the ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

It appears things will be extended beyond the initial plan.

According to a tweet from Stadium college basketball writer Jeff Goodman, the Division I council supports student-athletes who participate in winter sports, most notably basketball, being granted an extra year of eligibility. It’s more than likely that the offer will be extended to both those who plan to play and those who may possibly opt-out of the season altogether.

While all winter sports will be covered, the sport to keep a close eye on is basketball as it is the most lucrative of the sports on that list. The overall effect it will have on current players remains to be seen; naturally, every basketball player headed into their final year of eligibility will have their own reasons why they will or won’t return to school.

In any event, according to Goodman, the move is set to become official on Wednesday.
