The SEC has 2 coaches who were named finalists for the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach, on Wednesday.
That list included Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks and Texas defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski. They joined the likes of Arizona State offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo,Indiana defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Bryant Haines and Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden.
Banks has been key in propelling the success the Volunteers have had on defense this season. He holds 18 years of FBS experience as a defensive coordinator and is currently in the midst of his fourth season with Tennessee.
If Kwiatkowski takes home the honor, he will be just the second member of the Longhorns to do so. The last to do it was offensive coordinator Greg Davis (2005). He’s been the mastermind one of the most prominent defenses in college football this season, which currently stands at No. 3 in total defense, No. 1 in passing yards surrendered, No. 15 in rushing defense and No. 2 in scoring defense.
Both coaches have the chance to make history when the winner is revealed on Feb. 13. Previous winners of the award include Steve Sarkisian, Lincoln Riley, Brent Venables and Kirby Smart, amongst others.
