SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic shares takeaways following Week 5 action
By Keith Farner
Published:
Cole Cubelic offered his weekly takeaways following Week 5 action, and was candid with his thoughts about teams across the SEC.
Cubelic, who called the Mississippi State-Texas A&M game, called the Bulldogs win a big one in a very tough environment. He covered everything from Alabama’s win, and Georgia’s dominance, to South Carolina and Vanderbilt, which he said for each that you take every win even though they might not always be pretty.
Here are his takeaways:
We do it each week, my Sunday SEC takeaways…
ALABAMA: Execution defense vastly improved. 10, 31, 48 great up front. Safeties played well. OL dealt with movement in the run game well, more play action, more pre snap movement & more formations. Jump cuts from 4 getting real good

ARKANSAS: Couldn’t have those big mistakes. Especially early. Struggled to hold point of attack with 3 up front. Really couldn’t find a numbers advantage on offense. Needed to challenge downfield & couldn’t get the time. 16 needed more but it’s just not that easy vs that group.

AUBURN: Gusty performance by 10. Loved the plan utilizing more of his strengths & he still bailed them out multiple times. LT played much better. Misdirection, formations & motions helped. Solid plan. 37 added help off edge. 25 played rear ended off. Great to see that streak end!

GEORGIA: Dominant performance. They win with fewer numbers on defense & there’s not much you can do when that happens. Best the OL has looked all year. Big push up front. DL was just filthy. Credit QB for stepping in & executing. Having 0 back helps that offense be who they want.

LSU: Have to add some sort of a run game to balance it. The looks were there for it IMO. OL took too many L’s in pass pro. Def stout initially but have to get guys to the ground. Frustrating to win up front then give up big play after big play. 0 sacks with that much heat is bad.

MISSOURI: Just an unacceptable performance defensively. The lack of effort was concerning. Add that to penalties & turnovers & it’s gonna get ugly. Have to find some want yo over there. Off pressing once the track meet got going so mistakes became tough to avoid. Weren’t ready.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Big win in a VERY tough environment. That’s how Air Raid should look. Don’t undersell the QB’s patience. He’s so confident & calm. Big day for the WR’s. Best game for OL this season, didn’t see more that 2-3 individual loses in pass pro all game. They’re close.
— Cole Cubelic (@colecubelic) October 3, 2021
SOUTH CAROLINA: You take every single W. Fortunate to get that win after putting the ball on the ground that much. 99 & 1 very active up front. Now you enter midway point above .500 with some winnable games ahead. Need to clean up mistakes & get the OL going to finish strong.

TEXAS A&M: Too much talent to be struggling to move the ball this much. Had your OG’s back. Wanted to see them live there a little more. Left yards on field with downfield passes that missed. DL was gasses. Need some help with pressure. I know you don’t want man but had to add

VANDERBILT: Take the win! Don’t care about any how/why/look or anything. To shift the culture you just needs wins. Found a way to grind one out. Nice day for Seals. Found a few targets he can continue to build chemistry with. Over most people win total already! Now build on it!
