TCU is dealing with an off-the-field injury that will alter its special teams units for the foreseeable future.

Kicker Cole Bunce, who was expected to be the Horned Frogs kickoff specialist and top option for long field goals, was injured Thursday on check-in day when he was hit by a car while riding a scooter, coach Gary Patterson said, according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Bunce is out indefinitely, but could be out for the season, the report said.

This would be Bunce’s fourth season with TCU, and he could be eligible for a redshirt.

Bunce last season had 20 touchbacks on 62 kickoffs, but was just 4 of 9 on field goals with a long of 41 yards. For his career, Bunce has 81 touchbacks on 225 kickoffs and is 10 for 16 on field goals with a career long of 43 yards.

TCU is considering two options ahead of its season opener on Aug. 31 against Arkansas- Pine Bluff, including a freshman and a senior, who typically handles short field goal attempts.
