Texas coach Charlie Strong has strong thoughts on fall commitments

The world of college football recruiting is a difficult one.
High school players change their minds all the time — as they have every right to do — making a college coach’s job harder.
When coaches think they have a player locked up early, they still have to stay in touch with that player and maintain a relationship or else the athlete might change his mind.
Because of that, Texas coach Charlie Strong has said he still targets players who are committed to other schools.
In a profile story by SB Nation, Strong said he doesn’t buy into fall commitments:
“Whenever I see a commitment [in the fall], I donโt think anything of it,” Strong says. “Most of them arenโt going to hold to it. Because now coaches know theyโre committed to a school, you have to go beat that school. โOk, letโs go beat up that school.โ So just let them make their commitments. And then weโll go back in, and weโll go back in with a plan on how weโll get them.”
Strong makes a fair point. High school players commit and de-commit all the time, so it’s never a bad idea to keep players on your radar even after they’ve committed to a different school.
