Bowling Green became the first school to fire its head coach in college football when it announced on Sunday that Mike Jinks was let go.

Athletics Director Bob Moosbrugger released a statement that said it was time to make a change and he realizes that the decision affects many coaches’ families and student-athletes.

This is not a shocker for those who know the program well. The Toledo Blade wrote in August that it was a make-or-break year for Jinks, who was halfway through a five-year, $2.1 million deal.

“It is just as hard to imagine the depths the program has plumbed,” columnist David Briggs wrote. “Coming off the lousiest two-year stretch in Falcons history, boosters are nearing their tipping point. My sense is Jinks needs five wins this year to continue on.”

Bowling Green lost to Western Michigan on Saturday to fall to Falcons 1-6 and 0-3 in the Mid-American Conference.

The team was 2-10 and 4-8 the last two seasons under Jinks.

Defensive coordinator Carl Pelini was named interim coach.
