Auburn made program history this week when the Tigers climbed to No. 1 in the AP men’s basketball poll.

The Tigers became the 8th SEC men’s basketball program to reach No. 1. And they are the 6th SEC program to reach No. 1 in football and basketball.

Every SEC program except Vanderbilt has been ranked No. 1 in football or basketball (but the Vandy Boys have been a mainstay at No. 1 in Baseball America’s weekly poll).

Let’s take a closer look at each SEC program’s history with being ranked No. 1 in the two major men’s sports.

Alabama

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 137
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 2

Of note: Alabama football holds the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a considerable margin. Ohio State is next with 105 weeks. The Tide’s basketball team was No. 1 in back-to-back weeks during the 2002-03 season before falling out of the Top 25 altogether and losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Arkansas

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 1
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 12

Of note: Arkansas’ lone week at No. 1 in football came during the 1965 season. Frank Broyles’ squad was coming off an 11-0 season and jumped to No. 1 after beating No. 1 Texas in Week 5. Those Hogs drove 80 yards to score the winning TD in the final minute. Curiously, Arkansas kept winning but fell to No. 2 in the following poll. The basketball team’s most recent appearance at No. 1 came in 1994-95, when Nolan Richardson’s squad came just short in their bid to repeat as national champions, falling to UCLA in the title game.

Auburn

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 9
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 1

Of note: The Tigers’ most recent appearance at No. 1 in football came during Cam Newton’s championship season in 2010. That team started the season ranked No. 22 and didn’t reach No. 1 until its “Camback” victory over Alabama. The Tigers were 12-0 and finished their perfect season by dominating South Carolina in the SEC title game and outlasting Oregon in the BCS national title game. The basketball team climbed to No. 1 for the first time on Monday … and then nearly lost at lowly Mizzou days later.

Florida

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 41
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball:14

Of note: Florida ranks 2nd in the SEC in most weeks at No. 1 in football (behind Alabama) and basketball (behind Kentucky). The football team hasn’t been No. 1 since Tim Tebow graduated after the 2009 season. The basketball team’s most recent appearance at No. 1 came during a dominant 2013-14 season, when Billy Donovan’s Gators won a program-record 36 games but fell to eventual champ UConn in the Final Four.

Georgia

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 24
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 0

Of note: The Dawgs spent 9 weeks at No. 1 this past season, which culminated with their first national championship since 1980. The basketball program has never cracked the top 5 in the AP poll. Its highest ranking is No. 10, where it spent 1 week during the 1983-84 season. That team, led by future NBA player Vern Fleming, went just 8-10 in the SEC, however, and finished the season unranked.

Kentucky

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 0
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 125

Of note: Kentucky ranks 3rd all-time in weeks spent at No. 1 in men’s basketball, trailing only Duke (145) and UCLA (134). With Mike Krzyzewski retiring and John Calipari showing no signs of slowing down, it’s conceivable, if not likely, that the Wildcats will eventually supplant Duke. Bear Bryant guided the football team to its highest ranking, No. 3, in 1950, his 5th and best season as the Wildcats’ head coach.

LSU

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 38
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 0

Of note: Joe Burrow’s national championship team spent the final 8 weeks of the 2019 season at No. 1. The basketball program has reached No. 2 twice, most recently in 1989-90. That team, led by Chris Jackson and freshman Shaquille O’Neal, started the season ranked No. 2 but quickly fell to No. 9 after a 1-1 start.

Mississippi State

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 5
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 0

Of note: Dak Prescott led the football team to its only No. 1 ranking. The Bulldogs spent 5 weeks atop the poll in the 2014 season. The football program has only spent 3 other weeks in the top 5. So, yes, Dak was special. The basketball team’s highest ranking was No. 3, during the 1958-59 season. They’ve appeared in the top 5 just 3 times during this century — all during the 2003-04 season that ended with an upset loss in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.

Missouri

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 2
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 6

Of note: All of these accomplishments came long before the Tigers joined the SEC, but credit Mizzou for being part of the 2-at-1 club. In 2007, the Tigers’ football team knocked off No. 2 Kansas to climb to No. 1. Unfortunately, they lost the Big 12 Championship Game the following week. The basketball team most recently reached No. 1 during the 1989-90 season. That didn’t end well, either. The Tigers lost their 1st-round game of the NCAA Tournament to No. 14 seed Northern Iowa.

Ole Miss

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 5
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 0

Of note: The early ’60s were the golden age of Rebels football. John Vaught’s 1960 team was the first to climb to No. 1, spending 3 weeks there. His 1961 team spent 1 week on top. The 1964 team started the season No. 1  the last to reach No. 1, but a loss to Kentucky in Week 2 sent the Rebels spiraling toward a 5-5-1 finish. Ole Miss’ basketball history isn’t quite as rich. The Rebels have only cracked the top 10 once — a No. 10 ranking in 1997-98 that lasted only 1 week.

South Carolina

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 0
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 1

Of note: The gridiron Gamecocks were oh-so-close to reaching No. 1 late in the 1984 season. They were 9-0 and ranked No. 2 entering a game at Navy. The nation’s No. 1 team, Nebraska, lost at Oklahoma, opening the door. All the Gamecocks had to do was take care of a Navy team that was 3-5-1 and losers of 2 straight. South Carolina laid an egg, falling 38-21. Steve Spurrier got the Gamecocks as high as No. 3 in 2012. The basketball team started the 1969-70 season at No. 1 but quickly dropped after losing their 2nd game. They stayed in the top 10 all season and even climbed back to No. 2. Debate among yourselves whether a preseason No. 1 ranking should count.

Tennessee

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 18
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 5

Of note: Here’s a good did you know: Peyton Manning’s Vols climbed as high as No. 2 but couldn’t quite reach the top. The 1998 national champions spent the final 6 weeks at No. 1. The basketball team spent 4 consecutive weeks at No. 1 during a breakthrough 2018-19 season that ended with a loss in the Sweet 16.

Texas A&M

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 7
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 0

Of note: Bear Bryant, who obviously led Alabama to No. 1 and led Kentucky to its highest ranking (No. 3), guided A&M to its most recent No. 1 ranking in 1957. He left after that season to return home to Alabama. The Aggies’ basketball team reached program-high rankings of No. 5 in 2015-16 and 2017-18.

Vanderbilt

  • Weeks at No. 1 in football: 0
  • Weeks at No. 1 in men’s basketball: 0

Of note: The football program’s highest ranking was No. 7, in 1937. They haven’t been in the top 10 since 1947. Vandy’s basketball history is a bit richer. The Dores occasionally appeared in the top 5 during the 1960s and 70s. They peaked at No. 2 during the 1965-66 season. Thank goodness for Tim Corbin and his baseball team.
