Urban Meyer understands the College Football Playoff is expanding to 12 teams this season. However, he doesn’t believe there are 12 teams truly capable of winning the national championship this year.

On Saturday, Meyer was a part of FOX’s broadcast of Ohio State’s annual spring game. During part of that broadcast, Meyer revealed a list of teams he referred to as his “Elite 8” group of teams that he believes is truly capable of winning this year’s championship.

“Every year, I used to do this. I’d make circles and I’d draw — I’d call them the Elite 8. Cause realistically there are not 12 teams that can win a national title,” claimed Meyer. “I don’t think so. I think every year there’s an 8. There’s my 8.”

Meyer went on to reveal a list that included Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas out of the SEC as true contenders. Ohio State, Michigan and Oregon from the Big Ten were included, and he used Utah from the Big 12 to round out his list.

To no surprise, 7 of Meyer’s teams are among the best odds to win the national championship at DraftKings. The one outlier from Meyer’s group that seems to not belong is Utah who checks in at +6000 to win the title. Of course, Meyer’s connections to Utah and Kyle Whittingham are hard to overlook. Fans can use SDS’s national championship odds page and family of Caesars Sportsbooks links to track the line movement and latest odds for the season.

One team from the SEC Meyer seemingly overlooked a bit is LSU with Brian Kelly’s Tigers listed at +1500 and tied for the 6th-best odds to hoist the trophy this season. Florida State and Clemson were also unmentioned, but Meyer admitted the 9th team he had on the edge of his group was Notre Dame.

“Notre Dame was right there on the edge,” explained Meyer. “But I would always evaluate those 8 teams and say what do they have that we don’t have? I don’t really look at the top 10 right there. There are so many variables of how you can get there and how you can stay there.”

We’ll see how Meyer’s list plays out, especially with the introduction of the 12-team Playoff this season.
