Wake Forest vs. UConn doesn’t quite have the same ring to it on the gridiron as it does on the hardwood, but nonetheless, the two teams were in action on Saturday in East Hartford. It’s only the fourth time they’ve met in football and the first time since 2007.

Things haven’t gone well in 2024 for the Demon Deacons: they entered Saturday’s matchup at 2-4 and looking to avoid back-to-back seasons out of the postseason after a seven-year bowl streak was snapped in 2023. Dave Clawson’s team defeated in-town FCS foe North Carolina A&T to open the season and followed it up with losses to Virginia, Ole Miss, and Louisiana before a win against NC State, but fell to Clemson the next week.

And the Deacs’ slow mesh offense was in full effect on the road, but this particular play, though, looked to be a little slower than usual. Deacs QB Hank Bachmeier eventually handed off to RB Tate Carney, confusing the Huskies’ offense as Carney took it for a first down:

Later, you can see Bachmeier throwing instead of handing it off, patiently waiting for an option to open up with the Huskies thinking run:

Ultimately, Wake Forest won, 23-20 to move to 3-4. It resumes ACC play for its next game as it visits Stanford.

UConn fell to 4-3, its three-game winning streak snapped. It faces Rice next.
