We all knew that South Carolina’s signing class would look a lot different after Will Muschamp was fired and Shane Beamer was hired in Columbia but one move we didn’t see coming revealed itself on Wednesday morning.

Longtime South Carolina commit Derwin Burgess Jr. was announced on Wednesday as a signee of Georgia Southern.

The 5-foot-11, 177-pound Riverdale High School receiver had been committed to the Gamecocks dating back to June.

The Riverdale, Ga., native is rated as a three-star prospect and the No. 169 overall receiver prospect in the 2021 recruiting cycle by 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Following this news, South Carolina is down to just nine commitments in the 2021 recruiting cycle, which isn’t shocking considering Muschamp was recently fired and Beamer has yet to officially hire his South Carolina coaching staff.

Don’t expect the Gamecocks to make many waves during the Early Signing Period, as Beamer is still with Oklahoma helping the Sooners prepare for the Big 12 Championship Game. During February’s National Signing Day is when the Gamecocks will likely make their biggest splash of this recruiting cycle.
