SEC coordinator mentioned in connection with possible East Carolina opening
Bryan McClendon has coached the South Carolina to a strong finish during the second half of the season with three wins in five games, and an eye-popping performance at Clemson on Saturday.
While there isn’t yet an opening at East Carolina, coach Scottie Montgomery is on the hot seat, and could have a decision about his future after Saturday’s game against N.C. State, according to Brad Crawford of 247 Sports. The Pirates are 3-8 this season, which is Montgomery’s third season at ECU. The Pirates were 3-9 each of the last two seasons.
McClendon took over as offensive coordinator at South Carolina during the bowl game period last year. The Georgia graduate and former Bulldogs’ assistant was the interim coach following the departure of Mark Richt.
The Gamecocks are sixth in the SEC in total offense, seventh in scoring offense, third in passing offense and 11th in rushing offense.
South Carolina put up 600 yards of offense against Clemson, 602 against Chattanooga and against Ole Miss, the Gamecocks had 510 yards.
South Carolina OC Bryan McClendon's name has entered the East Carolina coaching fray, I'm told. Pirates expected to make the call on Scottie Montgomery after Saturday's game vs. NCSU. His buyout goes from $1.2M to 800K on Sunday.
