Shane Beamer addresses why LaNorris Sellers did not play in South Carolina's win over Akron
Shane Beamer did not feel the need to push LaNorris Sellers back into action.
Sellers is dealing with an ankle sprain he suffered in the LSU game. The Gamecocks monitored Sellers’ situation, but ultimately decided he would not play in the Week 5 game against Akron.
“We just got to the end of the week and he wasn’t moving great,” Beamer said after the game. “We didn’t think we needed to put him out there tonight in any circumstance. We expect him to be fine next week.”
In the LSU game, Sellers was the more productive quarterback. He rushed 10 times for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns, also completing 9-of-16 for 113 yards with 1 interception. Robby Ashford, Sellers’ backup, was 2-of-4 passing for 42 yards and rushed 11 times for 11 net yards in the LSU game.
Against Akron, Ashford fared much better. Ashford was 15-of-21 passing for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns, adding 16 rushes for 133 yards and 1 score on the ground.
Ashford led the way to a 50-7 South Carolina victory over Akron. The Gamecocks allowed only a 2nd quarter score, leading 22-7 at the half and dominating the 2nd half 28-0.
Ashford cruised despite missing a key member of his supporting cast. Running back Raheim “Rocket” Sanders logged only 1 carry for 1 yard and 1 reception for 6 yards before leaving the game early due to injury.
Beamer said Sanders is dealing with an ankle injury, but the standout ball-carrier should be back in action.
“It’s nothing long-term, we don’t think at all,” Beamer said of Sanders postgame.
South Carolina has some time to get healthy. The Gamecocks are off in Week 5 before they host No. 5 Ole Miss on Oct. 5.
Bye week couldn’t have come at a better time. My feathers are still ruffled after three Gamecock TDs were called back against LSU.
