South Carolina president denies that AD Ray Tanner asked FSU about Willie Taggart's buyout
On Monday, a report surfaced quoting South Carolina president Robert Caslen saying that South Carolina AD Ray Tanner had reached out to Florida State about how it raised money for Willie Taggart’s massive buyout.
Obviously, that doesn’t bode well for coach Will Muschamp’s future, especially in the midst of a 4-7 season.
However, later on Monday night, Caslen had to release another statement about how no one spoke with FSU:
JUST IN: South Carolina President Bob Caslen releases a statement re: AD Ray Tanner speaking to FSU about how they managed their buyout. #Gamecocks | @wachfox pic.twitter.com/ombaiJYBRp

“Let me set the record straight: Athletics Director Ray Tanner did not speak with anyone at Florida State University about coaching contracts,” the statement reads.
Notice that Caslen didn’t deny that he said what he said. He simply “set the record straight.”
Either his first statement was a lie or this followup statement is a lie. What a strange situation.
Perhaps he should limit the amount he speaks with the media, as he keeps having to issue more and more statements.
At least this dumpster fire is providing some heat for this cold weather….
This statement does not contradict the previous statement. They didn’t talk about contracts…they talked about raising money for buyouts.
This site changes their story every half hour…it’s like watching the weather channel…stay tuned folks…
I wish Tanner and Caslen would quit releasing statements. This is just getting embarrassing and I’m sure it doesn’t make recruiting easy for the coaches or help current player morale.
Until they can say either “Muschamp will be head coach in Fall 2020” or “Muschamp is fired”, just shut the fk up.
Yeah – those guys both need to STFU.
This, times a thousand. If this any indication of how a potential switch will be, we are so screwed.
It is starting to look Tennessee-esque
Did somebody hire John Currie as a consultant?
Exactly I’m waiting for the announcement that we hired Butch Jones before Arkansas could
With Ray Tanner, you are probably getting Derek Dooley.
These guys act like it is their first rodeo. You don’t leak this kind of information. Damage is done.
Here’s the real question. Who is going to be happy with the job any of today’s football players do after they graduate? Because the attitude for them will follow these football seasons. “What is my most convenient excuse for not going to work and improving every day”? And whatever that excuse is can’t be questioned so fire my boss.
Nothing to see here, move along.
The average tuition nationwide, per year with housing, is around 25k. If you took ol’Willies, Chads, and Booms buyout, added them all up you could send 450 kids to school. Transportation, books, room and board, etc… everything paid. For 4 years. You could send thousands of kids to school if they were to do the C.C. for a Associate’s, then 2 years at a in state University. Thousands…
But it’s not a zero-sum game. The big-time football revenues that support the coach’s salaries also drive tons of direct and ancillary revenue to the schools for educational and developmental purposes. Severely limit the coach’s salaries, football suffers, and eventually the schools suffer. Look no further than California for how that resistance-to-paying-market-rate model has relegated the state’s football programs to the doldrums, even at private schools like USC and Stanford. Dana Holgerson at Houston – a G5 school – makes more than the highest-paid football coach at a Cal public university. Factor in the cost of living difference and it’s even more laughable.
You gotta spend money to make money.
That doesnt mean throwing good money over bad. The coaches aren’t the ones that need to be in the revolving 20 million $$$ door, its the Athletic Directors and Presidents that make these ridiculous hires and extensions. They will continue to do so until they start being held accountable, its not the coaches fault, or their agents, that these suits agree to these insane contracts. These are Public Institutions, places of higher learning, and not some Minor League Football squad. Tax payers monies are being wasted, and in my opinion much of these decisions and contracts are borderline criminal.
I believe the majority of the dollars in these big salaries are generally paid from the school’s athletic association funding from private sector donations, right? It’s not like if you cut the salaries of coaches, that money then finds its way to academic scholarships or reduced tuition. It’s pretty much a closed financial system for athletics that pays for itself. And then some. The UGA Athletic Association, I know, donates about $3.5M to the university general fund each year.
The usc president needs to come clean about what he told the AD to do about this obscene buyout — I’m tired of this coverup!
